I like to call this module “Back to Basics”
Telnet
TASK A
This module takes us to the grassroots of basic Internet use before HTML pages and the general Web. This is well representer with the first task of accessing and using a Telnet client. I found this task quite nostalgic as it took me back to the days of DOS and those impossible to understand library and video rental store search terminals. Having never used a Telnet client before, I was stumped trying to find it. Using the Vista Help instructions, I installed the client to be presented with a command prompt screen. Then a puzzled look covered my face trying to work out what next.
I type library.deakin.edu.au and it says COMMAND not recognized. Upon entering ?/help I was provided a list of the necessary commands to initiate the connection. Once in the Deakin Library system, it was quite straightforward on how to navigate the controls. The task of searching for an Author and priniting to an email address was achieved with relative ease.
Task B
Ba hahaha ASCII Star Wars was quite pleasant. I thought it would be a quick summary but apparently it’s been fully done under Episode 4 A New Hope. The Internet clearly had been ‘hacked’ for creativity long before more common methods of flash animations and web graphics etc…Most enjoyable but not enough time to watch, clearly there is more study to be done!
FTP
Ah yes the golden rule of capitals, CAPITALIZATION MATTERS! I never actually used an FTP client before, only Peer to Peer clients which are loosely similar. I find it quite a useful and secure tool that has many applications. Setting up private and intricate FTP servers would make searching for files on remote machines a relatively painless exercise.
Internet Tools
Task A – Traceroutes
I found www.simplelogic.com as a Internet tools provider. This was refered by www.itools.com/internet.

This was a very nice and informative module, quickly introducing some aspects of Internet use I dont commonly use but will endeavour to take advantage of in the future.
